Rules for Lake Simcoe Living's

2011-2012 Photo Contest

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: The Lake Simcoe Living 2011-2012 Photo Contest (the Contest) is open only to amateur photographers. Anyone who has earned more than $1,000 in any year for photography is not eligible.

IMAGES: Each image entered in the Contest must be the work of the entrant. The photo must never have been previously published or selected as a winner in any other contest. You must have the consent of all individuals who are shown in the photo.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Photos can be JPEG, TIFF or EPS, and must be 300 DPI with a minimum size of 11 inches on the narrowest dimension. Photos may be submitted by email or on CD. The recommended colour profile is RGB.  

QUALIFICATION: All images entered in the Contest must be taken on or near Lake Simcoe, including anywhere on the Lake Simcoe Watershed. The location where each photo was taken must be identified. Photos taken outside the Lake Simcoe area will be disqualified. 

CATEGORIES: Each photo must be entered in the Contest under one of three categories: "Lake Simcoe People," "Lake Simcoe Places" and "Nature at Lake Simcoe." Each entrant is limited to one photo in each category, for a maximum of three photos per entrant.

DEADLINE: The Contest runs from Sept. 1, 2011, to Jan. 31, 2012. All entries must be emailed or postmarked before midnight on Jan. 31, 2012.  

JUDGES: The photos will be judged by a panel of expert adjudicators, including Lake Simcoe Living Magazine's art director and professional photographers.    

WINNERS: Winners will be announced in the Spring 2012 issue of Lake Simcoe Living and on the Lake Simcoe Living website at www.lakesimcoeliving.com.

PRIZES: One first-place winner will be chosen in each of the three categories. Each of the three first-place winners will receive a $150 gift certificate to be redeemed at Henry's Camera in Barrie or Newmarket, and a Gorilla SLR Tripod (MSRP $60).
One second-place winner will be chosen in each of the three categories. Each of the three second-place winners will receive a $75 Henry's School of Imaging Gift Card plus a Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW Bag (MSRP $90).

PRIZE WINNERS: In accepting a prize, each of the six prize winners agrees that his or her photo becomes the property of Lake Simcoe Living. The winner grants Lake Simcoe Living the right in perpetuity to publish and use the winning photos, as is or as may be edited by Lake Simcoe Living, accompanied by the winner’s full name in any advertising and promotion without further compensation, including but not limited to the Lake Simcoe Living website at lakesimcoeliving.com or Lake Simcoe Living brochures. The winners agree to assign all intellectual property rights including copyright, and waive all moral rights in and to the photo in favour of Lake Simcoe Living.

• Lake Simcoe Living reserves the right to withdraw or amend this Contest in any way, in the event of an error, technical problem, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, or any other cause beyond the reasonable control that interferes with the proper conduct of this contest as contemplated by these rules. Any attempt to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of this contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, Lake Simcoe Living reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution. Lake Simcoe Living reserves the right to cancel or suspend the Contest in the event of any accident, printing, administrative, or other error of any kind without prior notice or obligation.

Q  How long does Lake Simcoe have the right to use submitted images?
A  The six winning images will be reproduced in a feature in Lake Simcoe Living magazine, to display the winners.

Q  Does the photographer still retain full copyright and ownership of the image?
A  The photographer retains full copyright and ownership of each image.
Before any photo is used in the magazine, the photographer is contacted and must give permission before we use the photo.

Q  Does this agreement include full credit to the photographer when the image is used?
A   The photographer gets a photo credit in the magazine for every image that is used.(Please see Autumn 2011, Page 26, for an example.)

Q  Who are the judges?
A  Judges include Jayne Finn, art director for Lake Simcoe Living Magazine, and award-winning photojournalist Boris Spremo.
