It's time to make the Barrie community a little cleaner.
The snow has melted and warmer weather is here to enjoy. Spring ephemerals will be blooming soon and the buds on the trees will be popping open any minute now.
Unfortunately, winter left behind lockdowns and a whole lot of garbage. While we wait out these lockdowns and continue wearing our masks, we can still make our community a little cleaner.
Years ago, Living Green Barrie (LG) formerly Environmental Action Barrie started a community-wide cleanup initiative, Spring-Into-Clean.
Later, the City of Barrie took on this project but LG has continued to participate every year. That is until the pandemic hit. Spring-Into-Clean has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.
With disposable masks, PPE and other trash littering the streets, and entering Lake Simcoe, however, our city needs a cleanup now more than ever.
Enter the Trashformation Challenge.
If your Barrie street or waterfront property is in need of a cleanup, now is the time.
Step one — take a before picture of the littered area.
Step two — pick up litter.
Step three — take an after picture of the newly cleaned area.
Tag us in your photos to be entered in a draw to win a Lee Valley picnic backpack. The challenge is open until the end of April 2021.
For students looking for volunteer hours, this is a great opportunity to earn a few of those hours.
Pro tip- try using a wooden clothespin or old tongs for pickup.
Now, let the “Trashformation” begin!
Living Green Barrie’s mission is to guide citizens, businesses and local leaders toward actions that foster sustainability and resilience in the Barrie and Lake Simcoe community.
