National Fishing Week

Hello Fishing Friends,

Are you ready to get bit this week?

Did you know more people over the age of 15 in Canada fish that play hockey and golf combined?

Every year across Canada the Sun Newspapers promote National Fishing Week (July 3-11, 2010) by placing a special Fishing insert in their papers. I have been privileged to be able to contribute articles to this section since day one, thanks to my friend the late, great Rick Amsbury, who started the Catch Fishing Program and National Fishing Week 11 years ago. Rick was instrumental in promoting family fishing events and he pushed to allow an opportunity for new anglers to experience this great outdoor activity without a fishing licence. That opportunity began in 1993 with the Family Fishing Weekend. Thanks to his initial efforts, the Family Fishing Weekend in Ontario this year has expanded to include nine days (coinciding with National Fishing Week) when Canadian residents can enjoy the fun of fishing in Ontario without a licence.

Additionally, on July 10 and 11, there will be family fishing weekend events held across Ontario — where in most places, kids and their parents can come out, borrow a rod and reel, grab some bait and basic instruction and have fun fishing together — all at no cost.
