This exhibition links art practice and scientific research exploring the eco-systems of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe, to generate greater understanding of water quality issues. Current scientific research taking place at Lakehead University, Orillia Campus has been the catalyst for this group exhibition of selected participants who have been given references to academic research to develop their creative response utilizing and exploring new media as well as traditional methods of art making.

The artists involved in this project are:
Travis Shilling, Joanna McEwen, Peter McEwen, Peter Miehm, Sarah Uffelman, Heather Driver Kerslake, Luci Dilkus, Roger Kerslake, Karen Wild, Tanya Cunnington, Bewabon Shilling and Jennie Clark.

Simcoe Watershed Art Project is a collaborative visual arts project with an environmental theme created to involve regional artists in the expression and documentation of the wonders within the Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching watersheds.

“It is our goal to encourage members of the community at large and the environmental research communities to realize the potential of visual art to communicate environmental concerns. Beyond recreational purposes, the watershed and the quality of water it processes are essential to life.”

Elemental Mariposa: The Makers

Thu. 1 Jun, 2017 10:00 am - Sun. 23 Jul, 2017 4:00 pm

June 1 to July 23
Elemental Mariposa: The Makers
Part 2 of a 3 Series Exhibition examining the elements that make Orillia. The Makers celebrates the men and women who worked endless hours in a multitude of industries, creating products from raw materials and shaping Orillia’s strong industrial heritage. An exploration of Orillia’s innovation, from building its own hydro-electric power plant to the design and manufacture of one of Canada’s earliest motor cars, featuring stories and objects from Otaco Ltd., Tudhope Motor Car Co., Hurl’s Dairy, Canada Wood Specialty Co. Ltd., Orillia Brewery and more. A healthy community’s economic growth is dependent on the research and development of products that contribute to a community’s growth and sustainability.  In the early 20th century, Orillia was at the forefront of innovation, from becoming the first municipality in North America to build its own hydro-electric power plant as well as the design and manufacture of one of Canada’s earliest motor cars – first the Tudhope-McIntyre (1908) and then the Tudhope (1912).  This boom of innovation was accompanied by sawmills, iron foundries, and a host of manufacturing companies producing farm implements, and carriages, shipping these products across Canada.
This exhibit explores our community’s collective growth, this time around industry, labour, pride in hard work and toil to strengthen the economic and social development of the city.
