Stone Carving Project At Uxbridge Historical Centre

Tue. 4 Jul, 2017 10:00 am - Thu. 19 Oct, 2017 4:00 pm

July to October (Tues., Wed., Thur.)
Stone Carving Project At Uxbridge Historical Centre
Artist Fly Freeman will be carving on site: July to October, Tuesday and Wednesday Mornings (10am - noon), Thursday afternoons (1pm - 4pm).
The Arts and Visual Enhancement Committee (AVEC) has selected artist Fly Freeman to undertake the “Uxbridge Story in Stone” project, a massive stone carving that will be installed in downtown Uxbridge. Four carved panels will tell the story of the history of the town and the establishment of our trails.
The artist is on site three days a week working on one of the four 800-lb. blocks of stone. Fly Freeman brings a wealth of experience to the Historical Centre as she shapes the blocks of Indiana Limestone with the same type of hand-held tools that have been used by stone masons for generations. There are no compressors, power tools or electric grinders to create noise or dust. The work area is roped off but the public can easily view and converse with Fly in complete safety.
A special, free introduction to stone carving is available Thursday evenings at 6:30pm. Stone, tools and safety glasses will be provided. All are welcome and no registration is required.
Uxbridge Historical Centre, 7239 Concession 6, Uxbridge. The Centre is open for tours June 4 - Sept. 25, 10am - 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday (closed on holidays).

Donald A. Stuart - 50 Years of Creative Excellence

Tue. 25 Jul, 2017 10:00 am - Mon. 4 Sep, 2017 4:00 pm

In celebration of Canada’s Sesquicentennial, the Simcoe County Museum is pleased to announce our latest and uniquely innovative exhibition: Donald A. Stuart / Designer / Craftsman / 50 Years of Creative Excellence.

The exhibition features a cross-section of 50 years of artistic works, gathered together for the first time, by one of Canada’s and Simcoe County’s most acclaimed craftsmen, Donald A. Stuart. This retrospective showcases work from across the last five decades. The earliest piece is a sterling silver demitasse coffee service from 1967 which won two major awards in the Canadian Guild of Crafts exhibition of that year – Best Design and Best Hollowware.  Also included are many other national and international award winning pieces.

The Homage Collection, which includes 40 necklaces inspired by outstanding Canadian women and currently on tour at the Yukon Arts Centre Art Gallery in Whitehorse has been added to the exhibition. Homage celebrates contributions to Canada by women from all walks of life, across the centuries, from coast to coast. The exhibit is open until September 4th.

Mr. Stuart was born in Toronto, graduated from The Ontario College of Art and is a long term resident of Simcoe County (Midhurst).  Mr. Stuart is a recipient of both the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada.
