Bewabon Shilling: Between the Forest and the Sky

Bewabon Shilling: Between the Forest and the Sky

November 30, 2019 – March 2, 2020

Janice Laking Gallery

Curator: Emily McKibbon

Reception: Thursday, December 5, 7 to 9 pm

This major solo exhibition highlights recent paintings by Bewabon Shilling depicting the forest and skies around his home at Rama Mnjikaning First Nation. Working from the studio built by his late father, the artist Arthur Shilling (1941-1986), the works reveal a landscape refracted through a palette inspired by his father, but rendered in a visual vocabulary that is entirely his own. Heroic in format and presented in the changeful, grey light of the Janice Laking Gallery at midwinter, the paintings suggest a landscape wilder than our ability to comprehend it.

Bewabon Shilling was born in 1977 in Orillia, Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he received both the Norman Jewison Award and the Rose of Cedarvale Scholarship.

He has exhibited at Roberts Gallery, Toronto; the Gary Farmer Gallery, Santa Fe; Orillia Museum of Art and History; and Kensington Fine Art, Calgary.

He is represented by Roberts Gallery, Toronto; the Collectors Gallery, Calgary; and the Darrell Bell Gallery, Saskatoon.

Bewabon Shilling: Between the Forest and the Sky

Sat. 30 Nov, 2019 10:00 am - Mon. 2 Mar, 2020 4:00 pm

3rd Annual Canadian Ice Fishing Expo

Sat. 14 Dec, 2019 9:00 am - Sun. 15 Dec, 2019 4:00 pm

Gord Pyzer Now Among List of Ice Fishing Experts Hosting Presentations

Barrie Ontario: Georgian College’s Barrie Campus is the new home for this 3rd annual ice fishing extravaganza!  Located just off Hwy 400 at Duckworth Drive, the Building J venue is ideally situated to attract the largest concentration of ice anglers in Canada.

Anglers and vendors from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Simcoe and neighbouring counties, all regions across Ontario and from nearby border states will not want to miss this major event devoted strictly to ice fishing.

Situated a cast away from the province’s most popular ice fishing destination, thousands of Lake Simcoe anglers have visited the Canadian Ice Fishing Expo (CIFE) during the last two years and are sure to show up in droves again on December 14 and 15, 2019.

In an effort to expand their reach and attract anglers from even further abroad, the organizers of the CIFE are happy to announce that they have just secured legendary speaker, award winning outdoor writer, radio and TV personality Gord “The Doc” Pyzer. Gord will travel from his home in beautiful Sunset Country’s Kenora Ontario to be a special feature presenter both days; passing on cutting edge knowledge gained from decades of ice fishing across the country. As an inductee of the Canadian Outdoor Hall of Fame, the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame, Gord’s popularity with the ice fishing community across North America cannot be understated and CIFE organizers are honored to have the Doc join an already exciting line up of seminar hosts. The speakers will also include well known ice sticks from other parts of the province; including: Big Jim McLaughlin, David Chong, Yvonne Brown, Gerry Heels, Sebastien Roy, JP Bushey and Wil Wegman.

The two-day, open-to-public consumer show will be packed with fantastic features that our guests will not want to miss! Including:

  • 50 Exhibitors under one roof
  • Seminars and tips from industry leading professionals
  • New product demonstrations
  • Prizes and Giveaways
  • Buy the latest tech and gear at competitive prices – with more tackle shops than ever in attendance
  • Reasonable Ticket Prices - Adults $8; Kids 12 and under FREE with a paying adult
