Petroglyphs Provincial Park

Petroglyphs Provincial Park is an easy ride if you live on the east side of the Lake Simcoe, which I do, but probably a bit of a drive if you live on the west side.

I went with our Ladies Group in the fall and we had a great time.

This provincial park is a day-only use facility, but if you want to camp try Lake St. Peter or Silent Lake Provincial Parks which according to Parks Ontario are near by.

The main attraction of this park is a dome building containing Canada's largest concentration of Aboriginal rock carvings/paintings (petroglyphs).  Known as "The Teaching Rock" it is a sacred site.  We were all impressed by quantity of carvings, and appreciative of the interpretative guides which explained the meaning behind the some of the petroglyphs.

The Learning Place Interpretative Centre, at the park, is also pretty cool and well worth a visit. Through the use of  traditional native paintings the Ojibway people  invite you to learn about their heritage through the teachings of the medicine wheel.

Our Ladies Group didn't go hiking, but in case you want to, there are four nature trails in the park varying in length from 1-7 km.  The park is also home to a meromictic lake, which is quite unique.  Some how we managed to miss it, but this park also hosts Ontario's only lizard a Five-lined Skink.  Obviously weren't paying attention!

Enjoy :-)
