Connecting Lake Simcoe's Community

A development plan for Strawberry Island will be discussed Monday, Aug. 25, 7 p.m., at a public meeting in the Council Chambers, Ramara Municipal Building.

Strawberry Island Resort Inc. purchased the island in the northeast section of Lake Simcoe in 2007, according to a 2008 letter sent to Simcoe County by a planning consultant.

Ramara Council will consider a proposed zoning bylaw amendment that "will have the effect of redesignating the island property from "Rural" to "Island Accommodation," the notice of application and notice of a public meeting says

It says the rezoning amendment would permit a mixed use seasonal residential and resort accommodation facility.

Any person may attend the public meeting, and may make a written or verbal representation about the amendment, the notice says.

The planning consultant wrote in 2008 that Strawberry Island is about 27 acres, or 10.9 hectares, and was used as a summer retreat for the Basilian Fathers. (Pope John Paul II stayed on the island during a visit to Ontario in 2004.) There has been a resort on the property, as early as 1885, he said. At times the island has supported a hotel, cottages, and significant day use activities.

Strawberry Island Resort Inc. also owns a shoreline access property on Glen Cedar Drive in Ramara.  The property contains a boat launch and paved parking facility.
