Veteran school trustee Loralea Carruthers was officially nominated Jan. 15 as the Liberal candidate in the riding of York-Simcoe for the next provincial election.
“Premier Kathleen Wynne’s inspiring, people-centred and collaborative leadership got me into the Liberal Party and I’m excited to join her team,” said Carruthers, who serves as a school trustee for the York Region District School Board and on the East Gwillimbury environmental services committee.
The incumbent in the riding is PC MPP Julia Munro, who has held the seat since 1995.
In addition to her decade of local leadership in York Region, Loralea Carruthers served two terms as vice-president of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, representing all public school boards in the 2008 salary negotiations, reaching a harmonious, collectively-bargained contract with teachers and support staff.
In addition to her work as a trustee, Loralea is an environmental and community activist, including sitting on her town’s Environmental Services Committee. Loralea was also president of the East Gwillimbury/Newmarket Association for New Residents.
“I can’t wait to share our Liberal Party plans to create jobs and help people in their everyday lives, especially by investing in transportation to make life easier for commuters and by investing in education to support our young people,” said Carruthers.
