A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 13, for Bob Luery, a sailor lost on Lake Simcoe and presumed drowned Oct. 15.
Luery had been sailing his 22-foot Tanzer, Therapy, from his home club, located at Jackson's Point, to Lagoon City when he went missing.
The celebration of his life took place at Cedarview Community Church in Newmarket, where he had been very active, serving on worship teams, choirs, boards, men's groups, and various help ministries. About 1,000 packed into the church to remember him.
A retired real estate agent, he had just returned from a long dreamed-of trip to Europe.
Luery's real love in life was his family, including children and grandchildren, some of whom took part in the service.
High winds and sudden squalls had been reported on Lake Simcoe on Oct. 15. York Regional Police had said winds were gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour, and waves were up to seven feet.
