Connecting Lake Simcoe's Community

Windfall Ecology Centre, in partnership with Sustainability CoLab, has launched the ClimateWise Business Network for businesses looking to boost their competitive edge.

This target-based sustainability program focuses on helping businesses set targets for reducing their emissions and is the first of its kind in the region. ClimateWise aims to be the hub for York Region’s low-carbon economy.

The launch event on Sept. 20 featured presentations from environmental leaders across Canada and representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, focusing on the strong business case for sustainability.

“Becoming a founding member of ClimateWise was an obvious choice for LSRCA,” said Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority’s Chief Administrative Officer, Mike Walters. “One of our primary corporate goals is to develop strategies that build resiliency to climate change within our watershed communities, so it makes good sense that we do everything we can to reduce our own environmental footprint."

In addition to helping its members set and achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, the program will feature an event season consisting of educational forums and technical workshops that focus on improving sustainability in business operations.

“The launch of ClimateWise is a huge milestone for Windfall Centre and comes at a key moment as Ontario shifts towards a low-carbon economy,” said Brent Kopperson, Executive Director for Windfall Ecology Centre. "It's become clear that we are at a place where science says we need to take action. ClimateWise is our way of moving forward and fully engaging the private sector as a partner and collaborator."

ClimateWise is one of eight non-profit organizations across Ontario that operate programs focused upon engaging businesses and creating target-based sustainability initiatives within the private sector. The launch of ClimateWise Business Network is a further example of Ontario putting its climate change strategy into action, as the province has invested over $1-million from the Green Investment Fund into Sustainability CoLab and the CoLab Network.
